A terrific season ended in the state
tournament first round, as the Muskies fell 6-3 to the Big Lake White
Caps. The Muskies finish the season 24-10, having made their 5th
straight region tournament and their 2nd state tournament in 5 years.
Big Lake leadoff hitter Mitch Loegering doubled to start the game and
scored on a Muskie error. The White Caps added 2 more runs in the third
inning.
A 2-out rally by the Muskies tied the game in the 3rd inning. Adam Wenker walked to leadoff the inning. 2 outs later, Tim Burns hit an
infield single and draftee catcher Chad Hess walked to load the bases.
With 2 strikes Jake Sweeter smoked a liner over the centerfielder,
clearing the bases.
Former minor leaguer Dave Burkholder hit a long solo home run in the 5th
inning, putting Big Lake up 4-3. The Muskies yielded 2 more unearned
runs in the 6th inning, and couldn't battle back from the 6-3 deficit.
Brian Schellinger led Sartell with 3 hits and the game, and Tim Burns added 2.
